Questions we get asked

Citizenship: short answers

How long do I have to live in Austria to become a citizen?

As a rule, ten years of lawful and uninterrupted residence, at least five of them with settled residence (Niederlassung) (§ 10 Abs 1 Z 1 StbG). After six years it is possible, for example with German at B2 level, with German at B1 level and lasting personal integration, or as the spouse of an Austrian citizen after five years of marriage (§ 11a StbG).

Can I keep my previous citizenship?

As a rule, no. When citizenship is granted, you must give up your previous nationality. There are exceptions if this is not possible or cannot reasonably be expected of you, for extraordinary achievements and for acquisition under § 58c StbG.

How long does the procedure take?

As a rule, the authority must decide within six months (§ 73 AVG). In practice it often takes longer. A complaint about inaction (Säumnisbeschwerde) can then help.

What can I do if my application is rejected?

You can file an appeal (Beschwerde) with the administrative court within four weeks of service of the notice (Bescheid). In Vienna, the Administrative Court of Vienna decides.
